COTA Proposes Two Sites for New Clintonville Bus Turnaround

COTA is still searching for a long-term alternative to Graceland for a bus turnaround site. The previous proposal to buy a stripmall on the southeast corner of High & Kanawha has been replaced with a new plan to purchase one of two properties on the east side of High Street just north of Graceland.

COTA officials met with Clintonville area residents tonight to discuss the final stages of a deal to construct a bus turnaround just north of Graceland Shopping Center.

Any agreement would come after more than a year of back-and-forth between Central Ohio Transit Authority officials and residents wary of what a busy N. High Street bus turnaround would do to the neighborhood.

COTA says there are two potential sites: a used car dealership at 5160 N. High and a vacant house at 5132 N. High.

“They’re both willing sellers,” said COTA spokeswoman Beth Berkemer. “We have not made a decision on either property yet. We are still negotiating.”

Given their proximity to Graceland and appear to be surrounded by the deaf school, makes much more sense than the previous location.

Clintonville COTA Bus Turnaround Plans Change

COLUMBUS, Ohio — For more than a year, Clintonville residents and the Central Ohio Transit Authority have tried to work together about where to move the High Street bus turnaround.

Marty Stutz, COTA spokesman said the turnaround has to be moved from the present location at the Graceland Shopping Center because the owner, Casto, has development plans for the space.

D Searcy, a Clintonville Area Commission member said a local group advised COTA of several different sites where the turnaround could be moved on High Street.

COTA chose two of those sites including a used-car dealership at 5160 High St. and a vacant home at 5132 N. High St. owned by Wesley Glen Retirement Community.

Then on Monday at a community meeting, Searcy said COTA told residents neither site will work and they will have to look elsewhere.

“It was very shocking for people. It was frustrating because we thought we were moving along and obviously disappointing,” Searcy said. “Now, after 13 months of talking and searching for sites, we are back at square one.”

“Size and access issues forced us to look elsewhere,” said Stutz. “One site was too narrow and had environmental problems and we could not get easements from property owners next door for the second site.”
